In The Name Of God

Martyrdom of Imam Reza ( PBUH )

Imam Reza (peace be upon him) was born in 3rd Zighadeh, the year: 148 (lunar calendar). Sheikh Sadough has narrated from Abram Ibn Abbas:

“Imam Reza (peace be upon him) never bothered any one by his speech and never cut one’s speeches, never rejected anyone’s request and was always smiling.”

Life of this sacred Imam has been divided into three periods: before his imamate, along with his father which took long for 25 years, the period of his imamate before leaving Medina and the third period of his Imamate was when he went to Marve and Khorasan.

Why did Imam Reza travel to Marve? And why did he accepted to separate his family and his city.

Replying this question the following cases shall be mentioned:

Islam had encountered serious alterations in its historical survey as of the time of sacred prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny) up to the period of Imam Bagher (p.b.u.h.). Of course, the same alterations paved the way for scientific growth of Islam and the Muslims during the period of Jafari (the period of Imamate and scientific life of Imam Bagher and Imam Sadegh (p.b.u.h.) and after the same period.

School of Jafari serves as a preamble for scientific movement at the eras of Haroon and Mamoon. In this period, the books of Seriani, Roman, Iranian Greece were collected and translated. The sciences such as philosophy, medicine, mathematics, astronomy, …were discussed and negotiated. The problems of logic, rhetoric, jurisprudence, principles, were studied and analyzed.

Apart from the effect of such sciences on development and growth of the society, the negative aspect of change of thoughts and destabilization of ideas should not be neglected. Rhetoric and philosophies entered the lives of the people which created disorderliness of minds.

On the other part, by reign of Manoon Abbasi, there appeared a wave of opposition. Alavian rebelled against caliph in Islamic lands. For the same reason, Mamoon fearing continuation of the rebels and their widening, consulted with great men and made the decision to invite and to elect the greatest Alavi, a member of prophet’s family as the dauphin of the Caliph, to avoid future actions of the Alavi resellers and the dangers of their uprising against his reign.

Thus, taking into consideration the circumstances of the environment, to save Islam from negligence and deviation, Imam Reza traveled from Medina to Khorasan, though he was certain he would not return to Medina anymore.

At last, Mamoon fulfilled his evil plan and poisoned Imam Reza by  poisonous grapes. Imam Reza was martyred in the last day of month: Safar when he was at exile.
